Psychology For Determining The Perfect Headboards For Beds

March 9th, 2010 Desafano Yates No comments

It’s agreed that the bed is the focal point of any bedroom. But, selecting one that reflects the owner’s style and aesthetically pleasing can be a daunting task. For many when it comes to bedroom remodeling, a change of linens is about as far as many go. The reason is because choosing headboards for beds is much more complicated that it may appear.

Not only can the materials and designs of the structure affect sleep patterns, but overall mood as well. For instance, beds with arrows or other embellishments pointed toward the sleeper can invoke feelings of negativity and violence. It is believed that this is because a human’s natural reaction to threat is to strike out. Even though the conscious mind may think it’s beautiful, the subconscious may feel threatened by the design.

Many headboards on the market today are padded with a metal or wood structure beneath. This is an important consideration for those who enjoy reading or watching television in bed. Although they may fill this need, however, if they are the wrong design, disturbed sleep patterns and a poor mood will likely ensue. Many times, without knowing it, a person selects a headboard based on the career-path they’ve chosen as it is reflective of deep-seeded characteristics. For instance, someone who works in an office is often highly organized and structured whereas an artist is free-flowing and unconstrained. Each requires a different style of headboard in order to get the best rest possible.

The shape and design of the structure says much not only about the person, but what they do for a living as well. For instance, those who work in a corporate environment generally prefer a more contemporary feel with metal, wood, or wood and metal combined, sharp angles, and little, if any padding or material. The clean lines and minimalistic style reflect their need for organization and order.

For those with a more creative flare, soft, smooth curves, heavy padding, and color are generally preferred. Their need to feel free of constraints during the day needs to be carried over into the bedroom in order promote the free-flow of thought which helps maximize their potential.

Some of the most popular are made of wood without padding. Oak, ash, pine, cherry, mahogany, and much more are often selected because of their association with the past. They evoke images of a time gone by, a touch of antiquity, and classic beauty. Additionally, their maintenance-free designs provide years of use without worry.

More times than not a parent will select a bedroom set for a child with a particular theme in mind. However, when children are allowed to select their own furnishings much can be learned about their inclinations and nature. Just as with adults, whether they gravitate toward the hard, straight lines of contemporary, the soft, flowing lines of the creative, or the chunky, solid wood of history, their selection says much about who they are.

Rather than beginning a bedroom remodel with paint and new linens, taking a moment to evaluate what makes a person who they are then selecting new furnishings that reflect those characteristics will result in a project one will enjoy coming home to. This means selecting headboards for beds with the shape, color, and materials that best suit individual personalities should be determined first.

Creating A Boy-Themed Room

February 16th, 2010 Kelly Jackson No comments

As you know decorating a nursery when you’re expecting a son is fun but you have to face it that your little boy won’t be enjoying that room filled with baby items once he’s reached a specific age whether that would be 5 or older. You may see that he has taken to a sport, sport team, or another specific theme which you can base your new design off of for his room. You want to make their space reflect their personality along with the items which make them happy.

Make sure you are aware of which theme you are going to tackle this room with before starting any projects. If your son is old enough he may be able to tell you exactly what he wants and that may make your mind ease for awhile. He’ll be able to tell you what he wants and also go shopping with you for it. If your son is someone who really isn’t into anything big but a few themes put together try to manage a room which would be around that whether it is sports, television shows, or books which are his favorite. It will be quite hard to mess a little mans room up when designing it from scratch.

If your son doesn’t show strong interest on any subject, you can help him decide by showing him a list of options for possible room themes. The vast range of themed decor available in the market is quite comprehensive. From paint to bed covers, wallpapers to area rugs and fixtures to furniture, you could find something for just about any theme.

Once the theme has been decided, do a bit of research about it to get a better idea of the look you want to achieve. For example, a theme inspired by the Disney film Cars could call for the whole room to be painted in red, black and white. Cars merchandise like bed covers and printed area rugs make an immediate statement about the theme. Cars-themed toys and fixtures help complete the overall themed look of the space.

Dinosaurs are another great theme little boys may choose. Try painting the room in greens and blues along with a boarder or a great mural or wallpaper piece that has dinosaurs on them or the background of their territory. Tying this theme in with the decor is quite simple even if you can’t find enough dinosaur items in the stores. It’s a great way to have your little man be adventurous in his own bedroom.

There are many different techniques and ideas that you can create with in a boy’s room. Always remember your little man won’t be this size forever. He’ll want to change his room every few years since his style and mind will grow.

You always want to make sure you set a budget for your room and try to stay within that amount. No matter how much time and money you’ve spend on this masterpiece your little boy will enjoy, especially if he was helping you choose many of these items.

Making The Patio The New ‘In’ Space At Home

February 13th, 2010 Florence Whitaker No comments

Decorating your home should not only be limited to the interior spaces. The external part of your house also make up how your place looks. Furthermore, spending time outdoors becomes a more pleasant time in a place that is both beautiful and comfortable. With this in mind, consider decorating your patio.

Start your patio project by cleaning this area thoroughly. Make sure that you dust off furniture and clean the floor. A sparkling fresh patio in itself is already a transformation.

Candles look just as pretty outdoors as they do inside. Not only do they give the surrounding a romantic atmosphere, they can also serve the purpose of keeping bugs away. Outdoor candles that are scented with citronella can be found in the lawn and garden section of many department stores.

Summer is mosquito time, so they say. Outdoors during this hot season attract bugs and whatever flying organisms present in the ecosystem. Shoo them away without having to knock your arms out with candles. Right and scented candles in various colors, sizes and shapes can add to the decorative quality of the patio. Citronella and Eucalyptus are effective for bug-attacks without sacrificing the patio’s smell with insecticides. In fact, regular candles work too to ward off flies. For nighttime, give a relaxing and romantic ambiance by lighting lavender, jasmine or bamboo scented candles.

If you’re up for a newer do, consider painting the patio with a different color. Neutral colors look nice for outdoor areas but earth colors work as well.

Sometimes a little paint can go a long way. Give your patio a facelift by painting the railings that go around it. You might also consider painting to door that leads to your patio to give it a fresh look. Choose colors that match your house well. Consider using neutral tones. Tan, white and cream all look nice outdoors.

Wash down all your patio furniture. You will be amazed at how much a good scrubbing can do to make your furniture look new again. Use a mixture of mild dish soap and hot water, then rinse it all off with a hose.

Budget-Friendly Decorating Ideas For The Bathroom

January 24th, 2010 Rob Connely No comments

The bathroom is a highly functional room in the house. Without it, well you can just imagine how difficult life must be. Unfortunately, it is often neglected when it’s time to redecorate with the misconception that it is a tedious and expensive task. This article will prove otherwise…

To initiate the makeover of your bathroom it is necessary to decrease clutter. Take everything out of your cabinets/vanities and countertops. Go through all the products and decide what you really need. The items that are a must have store them temporarily in a spot where you can easily store find them later. Everything else you don’t need get rid of it. Figure out a plan to get organized. Next, you will head to your favorite discount store for storage devices. Look for plastic boxes, storage bins, drawer dividers, and clear cosmetic bags. These can come in different colors so if you find a set you really love consider adding their color scheme to your bathroom.

Next, organize not only the small items but the big ones too, such as your towels, drawers and cosmetic bags. If you have several towels in the bathroom, install a towel rack or towel pegs that don’t cost much.

An area rug that matches the bathroom’s motif is an instant decorative winner. It does not only prevent slipping accidents but it also makes the bathroom look more welcoming. Unlikely? Not so. Every room in the house should be an inviting and comfortable space and the bathroom is no exception. With a soft fabric for your feet and pleasing color or design for your eyes, an area rug is a must have item.

To bring more color, match the shower curtain and towels with the area rug. Let go of the typical impression of a sterile, dull bathroom. The more colorful your bathroom, then the more vibrant it will look. Because of the tile floor, bathrooms are also often cold, so make it a warm place by decorating with colors and decorations like an area rug and handy towels.

Lastly, maintain cleanliness in your bathroom. This doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. As long as you have handy cleaning products, you’re all set. No amount of bright colors, area rugs or stencils can make your bathroom nice if it’s unclean. A bathroom with minimal decors looks far better than a highly-decorated but messy bathroom.

If you found this information about Interior Design useful, then you are bound to adore these indoor outdoor area rugs.

Rustic Decor Brings The Outdoors Inside

January 18th, 2010 Noel Benson No comments

If you’re an outdoor person and always long to be surrounded with nature, you will love rustic home design.

There’s more to creating a rustic design than merely Adirondack-style furniture. It takes a clear understanding of rustic design components and a willingness to choose a style and stick to it.

Rustic decors may be centered on earth tones and wooden pieces, but the variety in the ideas that you can use are plenty. You can choose among the cabin log look, in the middle of the forest or clearing, mountainside dwelling, cattle and ranch style of the Old West and the Wild Wild West.

You don’t necessarily have to use wood as material if it will cause you hassle in doing so. You can just use paint that is reminiscent of a wood paneling. Shades of tan, cream, beige, off-white and browns will work nicely. Wallpapering is an option if you do not want to paint your walls. Choose a wallpaper design with a background that depicts nature or the outdoors.

Next, continue the rustic theme with wood accents. Wrap grapevine wreaths with berries rather than flowers. In fact, avoid flowers altogether unless they’re real wildflowers arranged in a pitcher or rustic vase. Instead, use wooden bowls as decor accents and fill them with aromatic pinecones or wood shavings. A wooden bowl full of apples makes a wonderful hospitality gesture.

Fabrics that are true to nature’s beauty will make the design more realistic. Corduroy and denim are ideal for a rustic look. Applying a rustic design will ask for some sacrifice though. That is, getting rid of wall-to-wall carpeting. Wood is the flooring of choice. If you prefer the Western ambiance, then Southwestern-style tiles will look great.

For the floor, wood is definitely in and so are braided area rugs. Enhance the theme with Indian rugs and drapes.

What’s the outdoor like without animals? Therefore, bring them in! Animal images on the walls or miniatures are pretty accents for this home theme. It’s like always being in the outdoors in the presence of beautiful animals.

Display your collectibles and vintage items for a more personal touch.

For instance, quilts are one of the few accents that work well in every rustic style except for Native American. Even cowboys had quilts back at the ranch house, as long as they are done in a style that reflects their culture. Smaller quilts make wonderful throws for couches and chairs. Larger quilts can even serve as art objects or wall coverings. However, make sure that the quilt style and pattern complement your Rustic decor choices.

Take your cue in decorating from the things you use in your outdoor activities. Highlight a specific idea, say cattle and ranch lifestyle and use objects that depict it. Mixing and matching is also okay as long as you don’t transform your home into a warehouse-like place. Decorate moderately.

You may be inside the house or outside of it, but as an outdoor person, you will never be lacking of the surroundings you so love.

Our best hint for Exterior Home Decorating, is to use area rugs – and the outdoor area rugs will suit any modern furnishings.

Head To Head: Carpets and Area Rugs

December 18th, 2009 Abigail Foster No comments

Despite what many people think, there is a vast difference between carpets and area rugs. At one time, the terms were interchangeable. That is not the case anymore.

Area rugs and carpets differ primarily in size. The former can be small or large pieces but still considerably slighter than carpets. Carpets cover the entire floor, that’s why there is the term “wall-to-wall carpeting.” Area rugs on the other hand, only cover a certain space. Area rugs are not secured firmly on the floor while carpets are held in place with carpet nails. You can break dance on a carpet all you want and it won’t budge a bit. Let us weigh some more differences between these two floor coverings.

If you are looking for a floor covering with more choices and varieties, then an area rug is what you are looking for. Area rugs come in several different sizes, thousands of different color, texture, design, and pattern combinations, and different levels of thickness. Area rugs are easy to transport from room to room in the event that you decide to change your decor. They are also simple enough to clean- just send them out to a specialized cleaning service.

Because of the decorative qualities and the specialty of the materials, area rugs can be a little more expensive than carpets. However, despite the price of area rugs, they are absolutely beautiful additions to any home or office. Area rugs have been known to be so treasured by families that they are passed down from generation to generation so that they are enjoyed for years and years.

Texture – area rugs differ in texture as they differ in materials. Cotton and wool fabrics are softer. Carpets’ too vary. Some are more luxurious than others are while some may have fine textile but can be a bit coarse to the touch. We know however, that we can step barefoot on both coverings and our feet will be cushioned well enough.

Cleaning a carpet though can be more tedious than just vacuuming or brushing, especially if you’re very particular about your chores. After all, you’re just dusting off the surface and not the floor underneath. To do so requires you to pull up the carpet and remove the padding, and that takes some amount of strength as carpets are quite heavy. Another downside is when it accidentally gets wet, like when there’s a flood, a leak from the ceiling or when your kids decide to spray it with water. It’s not that easy to hang the carpet on your front porch, as you would do with an area rug. You can’t just let it dry either. You really have to take it off to be washed and dried properly. In a worse case scenario such as flooding, you will need a new carpet altogether and disinfect the floor before installing it. Water, especially the filthy one can cause molds and mildews to grow under the carpet and that is very dangerous for your health. Plus, it’s disgusting to have fungi growing right in your living room!

From the given points, both these floor coverings have their pros and cons. It’s about which one suits your home better, which one meets your budget and which one you prefer.

Designing your Toddler’s Bedroom

December 14th, 2009 Paul Younger No comments

Is it time for you to clear out your child’s crib and design a bedroom centered around your toddler’s interests? One of the best ways to do this is by using calming colors to encourage rest and interactive toys for play time. You can also make things run more smoothly by designating specific play areas. Below are a few ideas to help you get started.

The crib goes out and in comes the bed. Toddlers are hyperactive and if they can only make decisions for themselves, they would probably rally on “no sleep and play all day!” chant. So make your toddler’s room as relaxing as possible to stimulate sleep. It’s hard enough as it is to put toddlers to sleep without the rich and bright colors, so just imagine how the colors yellow or red can do to a child’s awakened state. Go for the calming shades of pastels, tans, blues, lavenders and creams. Anything to encourage sleep, bring it on!

A child’s bedroom is usually also the playroom. Spare an area for play where you can put the toys. As your little one becomes more aware of the surroundings, maximize the use of interactive toys to develop your baby’s motor and coordination skills. These toys will also give your baby’s brain an added boost.

Designating specific areas in children’s rooms for different activities help keep everything organized. One great way to do this is by using area rugs. For the little boy that loves everything that moves, there are rugs that have roads on them so he can “drive” all of his cars around the town. If you have a bookshelf in the corner, place an area rug beside it and use this area for you and your child to sit during book time. This will help you to almost create “centers” in a child’s room. Since this room functions as a bedroom and playroom, why not designate a corner with a large rug as the toy area? If all toys stay in this area, it will save mom or dad from stepping on something painful when they go in after dark to check on the little ones. There are many ideas that you can incorporate with this. Always remember that you can order area rugs and other supplies online to save yourself a trip to the store. How much easier can it get than clicking a mouse and having it arrive on your doorstep?

Getting your hands on an area rug can be easily done through online shopping. You browse, click and confirm. Before you know it, the rug of your dreams is right in front of you. Your little one will love the new bedroom! Playing, resting and more playing will be even more fun with new decors, area rugs and finally, a bed to sleep on.

How To Keep Your Rug Clean

November 19th, 2009 Luke Pharkos No comments

Having an area rug in your home is beautiful but keeping it clean and stain free can be a very difficult task. There are several different ways that you can keep your rug clean. Here are some tips to keeping your area rug clean and stain free.

You want to make a rule in your home that states not eating or drinking around the area rug. Spills can happen and you need to be prepared for it when it happens. Unfortunately spills over time can take a toll on the carpet fibers. In order to make your rug last for a long time you need to take precautions.

Vacuum your area rug on a regular basis. This will help to remove any dirt and allergens that may be embedded into the fibers. Occasionally they may rise up and get into the air and cause allergies to act up.

If a spill happens then you want to get yourself a dry cloth and some water to dilute. Pour a little water onto the spill to release the liquid from the fibers. Take your cloth and blot up the excess water. Continue to do this until the spot is dry. Allow the area to air dry to avoid mold from growing.

You can use a mild rug detergent in order to remove stains that may occur during everyday use. This will also help to keep your rug looking new and clean. There is a problem with using some rug cleaners. Over time they can cause the fibers to deteriorate and the rug will eventually fall apart. Before that happens the carpet may become weak and crumbly or it may become frayed.

A final tip is that you should have your rug professionally cleaned every once in a while. No matter how well you clean your rug and how clean you keep it; your rug is bound to become dirty over time. Allowing a professional to clean your rug every so often will ensure that your rug stays properly clean for as long as you have it. Keeping your area rug clean is essential not only for your home to look good, but also for the health of you and your loved ones.
